What is science? |
Science is the study of the universe by the means of observation, experimentation, and repetition. The field of science is very broad, and includes a variety of subfields including biology (the study of life), physics (the study of motion and matter), chemistry (the study of how different kinds of matter interact), astronomy (the study of the stars, planets, and outer space), and much more. Scientific research serves as the foundation for incredible accomplishments and breakthroughs in engineering, medicine, technology, and exploration, and is essential to our modern way of life.

the scientific method |
Although there are many different scientific fields, they all share the same fundamental method for learning about the universe around us. We call this The Scientific Method. Researchers who use the Scientific Method begin with a question about some phenomenon that happens in the world. Then they observe that phenomenon to learn about it. After observation, researchers make an educated guess or hypothesis about the nature or causes of the phenomenon in question. Scientists then test the hypothesis, to see if it is true or false, by creating experiments. Scientists collect data from their experiments and analyze the data to see whether it confirms or denies the hypothesis. If the data conflicts with the hypothesis, the scientist revises it and redesigns the experiment to test the new hypothesis. If the data confirms the hypothesis, the scientist repeats the experiment. Either way, scientists share their results with the scientific community so that other researchers can test their hypotheses independently and continue to add to the total knowledge of humanity.
